The University of Washington, a world-class public university, seeks a dynamic, accomplished, inspiring, and collaborative individual to serve as Vice Provost for UW Educational Outreach (UWEO).
As the state’s flagship university, the University of Washington serves more students than any other institution in the Northwest. It has thriving campuses in Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma. UWEO is one of the leading educational outreach units in the country. It administers UW Extension, Summer Quarter, UW Online, fee-based degree programs, several programs delivered internationally, and English as a Second Language programs for the University of Washington. It includes 255 FTE employees who operate on a self-sustaining basis. Educational Outreach has a budget of approximately $159 million and attracts more than 48,000 students who account for more than 100,000 enrollments.
The Vice Provost of UWEO works closely with UW academic partners to develop an overall strategic, fiscal, and programmatic direction for self-sustaining educational programs that further the access mission and academic excellence of the UW. The Vice Provost is a leader in creating and managing innovative fee-based educational programs that extend the resources of the UW to a wide variety of nontraditional students. The Vice Provost interfaces with faculty, staff, and administrators across UW’s campuses, colleges, schools, and departments as well as a wide range of community organizations to ensure the delivery of high-quality educational programs. The Vice Provost creates and manages partnerships with businesses, other educational institutions, and professional organizations, both nationally and internationally. The Vice Provost operates in a competitive educational environment to ensure academic excellence, reach enrollment targets, ensure the quality of service to the students and the community, and preserve the fiscal integrity of the University. The Vice Provost works to enhance excellence through diversity in educational programs and the recruitment of instructional staff and students and fostering an organizational culture benefiting each of its constituencies – faculty, administrators, staff, students, and the public at large.
UWEO requires dynamic and innovative leadership. Candidates must demonstrate vision, entrepreneurial creativity, and collaborative and managerial acumen, along with a strong commitment to continuing education and to research, teaching and, more generally, public service; to advancing diversity and inclusion; and to UW’s broad vision and public mission.
Ideal candidates will have substantial administrative leadership experience; professional accomplishments and administrative experience in continuing education and outreach; knowledge of transformative trends in the field; and the ability to exercise leadership at local, state, and national levels.
Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree and strong academic and administrative credentials; experience leading and managing substantial self-supporting programs, including financial management, marketing, online and distance education, and human resources; proven success in—or aptitude for—external relations and development; experience with international programs and partnerships; and a record of success in developing effective relationships between continuing education programs and academic colleagues, administrators, businesses, and community organizations.
