STEM coordinator for Neighborhood House

Status: Regular, Full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Hiring Range: 17 ($18.17-$20.46 per hour)

Scope

The STEM Coordinator will play a key role in a new National Science Foundation sponsored partnership between Neighborhood House (NH) and the University of Washington (UW). This partnership will launch an innovative project in the High Point Community to offer a range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs to middle and high school youth. This project will include building a new “tinkering studio” in this community, modeled on the Exploratorium in San Francisco, middle school student programs to increase awareness of the role women and people of color have played in STEM careers, and High School Programs that include career exposure and job shadows or internships with STEM related employers. Students will be matched with mentors from UW to support their learning and enthusiasm, and to support NH students to understand important steps for college and career readiness. These activities are designed to increase awareness and interest in STEM academic and career choices among diverse, low income and immigrant youth. The STEM Coordinator will develop and deliver culturally responsive curriculum as well as help coordinate with our partners at UW to support project success. 

 

Responsibilities

Youth STEM Programming and Youth Development

  • Lead in setting up and maintaining a “tinkering lab” onsite, and support programming of the lab in partnership with UW collaborators including faculty, graduate student research assistants, and undergraduate mentors.
  • Recruit youth for program participation and monitor attendance for high program retention.
  • Adopt, design and implement engaging youth multicultural STEM curriculum with UW partners for approximately 40-45 middle and high school age youth per year.
  • Work with youth to identify areas of interest, passion, skill development, and career interest in order to create enhanced learning opportunities for High Point youth (job shadows, speakers, experiential learning, etc.).
  • Organize and facilitate community events, field trips, college visits or other activities to promote interest in STEM education and career options.
  • Foster strong relationships with diverse families to support youth in their development, including leading or participating in family events.
  • Provide regular, on-going sound coaching and mentorship to participating youth, and be a visible role model to all youth living in the High Point Community.
  • Coordinate with internal team on NH youth experts to maximize linkages and partnerships, share best practices, ensure high quality programming and develop new program ideas to meet youth needs.

 

Administrative and Program Development

  • Work closely with key partners at UW, including the DREAM Project, College of Education and Pipeline Project, to ensure smooth program coordination and communication.
  • Identify and develop key partnerships that provide a wide range of experiences and opportunities for youth.
  • Coordinate youth and family services with other NH programs to maximize the experience and support for participating youth.
  • Maintain good working relationships with High Point providers and others in the spirit of collaboration and partnership.
  • Participate in and contribute to community events or meetings at High Point.
  • Maintain key project documents, including participant tracking and other reporting elements.
  • Assist with evaluation and project reporting.
  • Assist with budget development and oversight.
  • Assist with fund development to enhance youth programming.
  • Demonstrate NH’s No Wrong Door operating philosophy to ensure that all program participants have access to any needed service NH can offer, when and how they need them.

 

Supervision and Support

  • Maintain a safe, respectful and engaging environment for youth and adults.
  • Supervise youth interns or peer leaders.
  • Recruit, train and support peer and adult volunteers, AmeriCorps members and others to help support youth programming, as needed.
  • Provide support to UW Dream Project Mentors and student interns as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.A. degree in a STEM-related field preferred; or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Two years of demonstrated curriculum development/ coordination/program management experience, preferably in running youth STEM programs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of developmental needs and learning preferences of middle and high school aged youth.
  • Knowledge of best practices and effective curricula for youth STEM, after-school and/or summer learning programs.
  • Familiarity with local youth serving programs.
  • Knowledge of diverse communities and ability to develop culturally relevant programming./li>
  • Ability to articulate a vision about preparing youth for the future—from social, economic, cultural and personal perspectives—to youth, partners, funders and the community.
  • Highly positive and enthusiastic style capable of motivating others.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a multicultural organization and community.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be self-starter, dependable, have strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use good judgment as necessary.
  • Current First Aid certification within 30 days of hire (maintain current certificate during employment).
  • Current CPR certification within 30 days of hire (maintain current certificate during employment).
  • Current Child Protective Services training (within 90 days of hire).
  • Current Food Handlers Permit (within 30 days of hire (maintain current certificate during employment).
  • Must have reliable, independent transportation for frequent travel between sites.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency performance standards, which require productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service-orientation and the maintenance of a professional demeanor.
  • Must pass Neighborhood House Background Check Requirement.
